SENIOR PASTOR Rev. Rendell Hipps
Welcome Rev. Rendell and Kelly Hipps

Rendell is a native of Leicester, NC where he grew up on a family farm.  His spiritual journey began in a small Baptist church where he came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior at age 11. He is a graduate of NC State, earning both BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering.  He worked for 7 years as a hardware designer at IBM in the Research Triangle and then at Alcatel in Raleigh, NC, designing line cards for high-speed internet access.  After strongly sensing God’s call to vocational ministry, Rendell quit his engineering job and attended Gardner-Webb University’s School of Divinity where he earned the M.Div. degree with an emphasis in pastoral studies.

Rendell served for three years as Associate Pastor at a Baptist church in Charlotte, NC before being called to First Baptist Church, Hickory, NC.   There, He served almost 11 years as the Associate Pastor of Discipleship.  He served during two extended interim periods, assuming the many roles of a senior pastor, and during the second interim period, he served as the Acting Senior Pastor.  For two extended periods of time, he also served as the interim contemporary worship leader.  Rendell enjoys music, playing piano/keyboard, working out at the gym, working outdoors, lazy days on a quiet beach, working with power tools, wood working, and cooking.  He also enjoys architectural drawing, so much so that he designed the home he and his wife lived in while in Hickory.   Rendell currently is serving on the Board of Directors for the Christians Service Organization of Gardner-Webb University.

Rendell is married to the one-and-only love of his life, Kelly.  According to Rendell, “Kelly is my best friend, ministry partner, and biggest cheerleader.  She is the best children’s Bible Study teacher ever and has the biggest heart for people I have ever seen.”  Kelly is a servant of Christ and has been involved in every aspect of church ministry, serving as a deacon, on various committees, and ministering to the least of these, underprivileged children in the Hickory area.  In her professional career, Kelly worked 23 years for H&R Block as a tax professional, also doing virtual training for employees throughout the US.  She also recently has served on the board of directors for Habitat of Humanity of Catawba County.  Rendell and Kelly now reside in Candler, NC with their sheltie, Joey.

Rendell’s life verses are Colossians 3:15-17.  HIs preaching and teaching are Biblical, theologically sound, applicable, and focus on the Gospel of Christ.  As part of his ministry of making disciples for Jesus (Matthew 28:16-20), he values helping stretch the mind and heart of fellow believers (Romans 12:2) through his preaching and teaching.  He always strives to lead others to know the Lord more fully and to follow His way more completely.  He takes study of the scriptures seriously (2 Timothy 2:15) and endeavors to help others do the same. He does not shy away from challenging topics, having a special interest in teaching classes in the church on creation/evolution, the  book of Revelation, the basics of biblical theology, and book studies like one of his favorites, Jonah.  He has written numerous Bible studies for use in the church including discipleship materials for new believers, Jesus’ parables, the minor prophets, “The Bible Jesus Read”, and more.  Rendell has a passion for those outside the church/kingdom who do not know Christ as their Savior.  He is passionate about making church and the Gospel accessible and relevant in today’s world.  He endeavors to reach the younger generation without alienating the older, believing there are ways to bring all generations together as “the church” in worship, study, and service.  Rendell also enjoys creatively arranging old and new worship songs for use in the church.  Several of his arrangements which wed together a hymn with a modern contemporary song have been used in corporate worship experiences.

Rendell is excited to shepherd the folks of Calvary after finding it to be the kind of Baptist church that lovingly and unapologetically points the world to the uniqueness of Jesus as Savior and Lord, the Word made flesh; that teaches and preaches solely from the holy written word of God, the Bible; that celebrates the majesty and goodness of God in Spirit-filled worship that utilizes both the old and new; that desires to reach the lost, unchurched, and de-churched with the message of the Gospel; that values disciple-making in an environment of authentic community; that allows for honest inquiry in matters of life, faith, and the Bible; that values the God-given gifts and callings of all believers, both men and women; that follows the traditional, Biblical model for family and marriage; that is missionally engaged in the community and world; that shares the Gospel in both word and deed; that is forward-looking and forward-thinking and wants leaders who are forward-looking and forward-thinking; and that is poised to move as one unified body into the future that God has for His church.
